Peanuts, commonly known as groundnuts, are scientifically known as Arachis hypogaea. It is a species in the legume "bean" family and native to South America, Mexico and Central America. Presently, it is cultivated the world over in climates that are favourable for its growth: long warm periods and plenty of rain.
